The Save-a-Soul team from Nigeria beat other countries including China and Turkey at the global level of the competition held in the United States to emerge the overall winners of the junior level of the 2018 Technovation competition.
The project that won them the first position was centered on solving the problem of fake drugs in Nigeria. Their pitch was built around a mobile app they designed, FD Detector, that can detect original pharmaceutical products and their expiry dates using the barcodes on their packets.
The team Save – a – Soul from Nigeria beat more than 2,000 teams of mobile app developers in Africa to emerge as representatives of not just Nigeria but Africa as a whole.They are the first Junior team to ever qualify to represent Nigeria at Silicon Valley. The young Nigerian girls on Thursday emerged as the winners of the Technovation competition after pitching their idea to investors in California.
According to these teenage girls, their mobile app idea was born out of a need to combat the rampant issues of fake drugs in Nigeria. With their app, they would be partnering with National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control NAFDAC to fight against fake drugs.
Technovation is a competition that calls on girls all over to world to identify a problem in their society and create a solution to it using a mobile app. These teenage girls from Anambra have made Nigeria proud and the Vice President of Nigeria, Prof Yemi Osibanjo acknowledged their victory on his Twitter account when he tweeted, “These young ladies in Junior Secondary School developed a mobile application called FD Detector to tackle the problems of fake pharmaceutical products in Nigeria. Congratulations! We are very proud of you.”
