Defending champions Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff enjoyed comfortable wins in the first round of the US Open, while Dominic Thiem bid a final farewell to the Grand Slam where he enjoyed his greatest triumph. Djokovic, looking to become the first player to capture 25 Grand Slam titles, capped the evening session under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium with a 6-2 6-2 6-4 victory over Moldovan qualifier Radu Albot on Monday night. Three weeks after winning the singles title at the Paris Games, Djokovic toted his rackets and gear in a pair of gold-coloured bags onto the court where…
Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed he plans to end his career with his current club Al Nassr – but probably not for another two or three years. The Portugal superstar has dashed any hopes of a return to his first club Sporting Lisbon by confirming he plans to stay in Saudi Arabia until he retires. “I don’t know if I will retire soon, in two or three years, but probably I will retire here at Al Nassr,” Ronaldo told Portuguese channel NOW. “I’m very happy at this club, I feel good in this country, too. I’m happy to play in Saudi…
Nigeria have appointed Germany’s Bruno Labbadia as the country’s new coach, making him the third appointment to the post in a tumultuous year in the African nation’s men’s football team. The former German international’s appointment was announced by the Nigeria Football Federation on social media on Tuesday, saying his appointment was “with immediate effect” but without giving any details of the contract duration. Labbadia takes charge 12 days before Nigeria kick off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a Group D tie home match to neighbours Benin in Uyo. The team also play away in Rwanda three…
The United Arab Emirates has said it is following closely the case of Telegram messaging app founder and CEO Pavel Durov – who is an Emirati citizen – following his arrest and the extension of his initial detention by authorities in France. The Russian-born Durov, 39, was detained on Saturday at Paris-Le Bourget Airport in France based on a judicial inquiry opened last month involving 12 alleged criminal violations involving his popular Telegram app, the Paris prosecutor’s office said. The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement early on Tuesday that it was “closely following” Durov’s case and that it…
An election will be held for the first-ever time to decide the new Chancellor following 80-year-old Lord Chris Patten’s decision to retire later this year. More than 250,000 Oxford graduates and former staff members will be able to vote online for the role which has only been held by three people since 1960. These are former Conservative Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, ex-Labour home secretary and president of the European Commission Roy Jenkins and Lord Patten. Several ex-politicians have thrown their hats into the ring this year including former PM Theresa May as well as Lord William Hague and Lord Peter…
A missing pair of scissors caused more than 200 flights to be canceled or delayed at one of Japan’s biggest airports. Staff at a store in the New Chitose Airport reported the missing item Saturday, according to a news release from the airport’s operator, Hokkaido Airports Co. Ltd. As a result, officials at the facility in the northern Hokkaido prefecture, decided to temporarily suspend all flights, close security checkpoints and conduct security inspections, the release added. At total of 201 flights — 129 departures and 72 arrivals — had been delayed, the news release said. A further 36 had been…
While walking his dog with his mom, a 12-year-old boy in the U.K. made an unexpected discovery in a field — not a stick for his dog or an interesting rock, but a first-century gold bracelet from Roman Britain. Unlike most other jewelry from the Roman era, the lustrous bracelet probably wasn’t worn by a woman, researchers later surmised. Instead, it likely belonged to a man who had received the accessory as a military honor, likely an “award for bravery,” according to a statement from the local Chichester District Council. The cuff bracelet has been described as “exceptional” and “relatively…
Google and Australia’s national science agency said they will work together to develop software that automatically detects and fixes network vulnerabilities for operators of critical infrastructure, seeking to contend with a surge in cyberattacks. The software for organisations such as hospitals, defence bodies and energy suppliers will be customised to be in line with Australia’s regulatory environment. “Software supply chain vulnerabilities are a global issue, and Australia has led the way in legislative measures to control and combat the risks,” said Stefan Avgoustakis, head of security practice for Google Cloud in Australia and New Zealand. The Australian government has been…

The Parisian entertainer performed live, standing centerstage at the Stade de France then calmly strutted on the platform like she famously does during major fashion runway shows such as Balmain and Balenciaga. It was a big moment for the singer, who sang the rendition of Frank Sinatra’s classic “My Way,” which derives from the French song “Comme d’habitude,” composed by Jacques Revaux and Claude François. “The lyrics match perfectly with my career,” Yseult told The Associated Press in an interview on the rooftop of a luxury hotel in Paris. The singer said she choose Sinatra’s popular 1969 ballad over the…
