The Indian government has opposed petitions in the top court that seek criminalisation of marital rape, saying it would be “excessively harsh”. A long-running legal battle between ex-Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Lassana Diarra and Fifa has ended with the European Court of Justice finding in favour of the former player. Diarra’s legal team challenged some of Fifa’s rules after the termination of his contract with Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow in 2014. They argued some of the rules imposed by football’s global governing body restricted his freedom of movement and breached competition law, and sued Fifa for damages. A Nevada Republican politician who ran unsuccessfully two years ago for state treasurer was found guilty Thursday of using funds raised for a statue honoring a slain police officer for personal costs, including plastic surgery. A jury convicted Michele Fiore, a former Las Vegas city councilwoman and state lawmaker, of six counts of federal wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, KLAS-TV in Las Vegas reported. At least 274 inmates have escaped from a prison in Nigeria’s Borno state following heavy flooding, the Nigerian Correctional Service said, as aid agencies reported more than 1,000 people had died across western and central Africa.
