One year into his tenure with the Padres, Mike Shildt has been rewarded with a two-year contract extension that ties the manager to San Diego through 2027. The Padres announced the agreement Wednesday with the 56-year-old manager after they went 93-69, finishing five games behind the eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West and claiming the top NL wild card. “I am honored to continue leading this team toward Peter Seidler’s vision of bringing a World Series championship to San Diego,” Shildt said in a statement. “In collaboration with our players and coaching staff, we are committed to building on…
Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid is ready to return to the lineup Wednesday against the visiting Vegas Golden Knights. McDavid initially was expected to miss two to three weeks after injuring his ankle during his first shift against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Oct. 28. The three-time Hart Trophy recipient, however, sat out his team’s next three games before participating in Wednesday’s morning skate on a line with Zach Hyman and Jeff Skinner. “I feel good,” McDavid said after the morning session. “Looking forward to going and getting back in there.” McDavid, 27, is tied with a team-high seven assists to go along with three goals in…
Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid was suspended by the NBA on Tuesday for three games without pay for shoving a member of the media. Embiid’s suspension will begin with the next regular-season game for which he is eligible and able to play. The 2023 NBA MVP has yet to play this season because of what the 76ers call left knee management. The Sixers begin a road trip in Los Angeles against the Clippers on Wednesday night. Embiid shouted at and eventually shoved a newspaper columnist in a locker room altercation Saturday night. “Mutual respect is paramount to the relationship between players…
President-elect Donald Trump’s election victory is already beginning to elicit requests from his supporters charged in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol for delays in their cases due to the potential they could be pardoned after Trump’s inauguration. Attorneys for Christopher Carnell, a 21-year-old defendant from North Carolina who was found guilty earlier this year of felony and misdemeanor charges over his participation in the Capitol assault, requested Wednesday morning that D.C. District Judge Beryl Howell delay a status hearing in his case scheduled for later this week, citing Trump’s past promises to pardon his supporters. “Throughout his campaign, President-elect Trump made…
Former President Donald Trump is projected to win the presidential race by ABC News, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in a frenzied contest to stage an improbable historic comeback. Trump ended up with at least 279 electoral votes after clinching wins in the swing states of Pennsylvania, Georgia and Wisconsin. Harris has won at least 219 votes. The race was marked by literal history, including two assassination attempts and 34 felony convictions against Trump, already having been impeached twice and faulted for mismanaging the COVID-19 pandemic response. Maybe even more memorable was President Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the race after a…
The 17-year-old midfielder curled in a superb first-half effort after Gabriel Jesus’ first goal since January had set Arsenal on their way. Substitute Kai Havertz rounded off the scoring after the break for the Gunners, who will face Crystal Palace at home in the quarter-finals in the week commencing 16 December. Academy product Nwaneri, who registered his first senior goals in the 5-1 win over Bolton in the previous round of the competition, also hit the crossbar on Wednesday and was serenaded by the visiting fans after being substituted late on. “He’s a big talent, he’s got the right attitude and he’s…
A topsy-turvy game was turned upside down at its halfway point as the Dodgers exploited Yankees fielding errors in the top of the fifth inning to level the scores. “We just took advantage of every mistake they made in that inning and scored five runs,” left fielder Teoscar Hernandez said. “The bullpen and the pitching staff gave us the chance to stay in the game. It’s a dream come true.” It is a second title in five years for the National League champions, who had previously won in the Covid-shortened 2020 season. Facing elimination, the Yankees came out swinging in…
Argentina’s president, Javier Milei, has sacked his foreign minister, Diana Mondino, after the country voted in favour of lifting the US economic embargo on Cuba at the United Nations. Argentina was one of 187 countries that supported the non-binding UN resolution on Wednesday. Only the US and Israel voted to oppose the resolution. It was the first time since Milei’s arrival in office that Argentina has not aligned itself with the US and Israeli governments. Mondino has been replaced by the ambassador to Washington, Gerardo Werthein. Following the move, President Milei’s office said Argentina was “categorically opposed to the Cuban…
Civil rights leaders believe that a decision handed down by the Supreme Court on Wednesday could lay the framework for post-election challenges. The high court’s conservative majority ruled to block an order from a federal judge that would have reinstated some 1,600 individuals to Virginia’s registered voter count. Those individuals were removed in accordance with an executive order by Gov. Glenn Youngkin that required the daily purge of self-identified noncitizens from the state’s voter rolls. The Aug. 7 executive order brought lawsuits from immigration and civil rights groups, as well as the Justice Department, all of which alleged that it violated…
England captain Ben Stokes is a doubt for the first Test against Pakistan in Multan as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. Stokes, 33, has been out since the beginning of August, missing the 2-1 series victory over Sri Lanka. England trained in Multan for the first time on Friday. All-rounder Stokes batted in the nets and bowled a handful of deliveries off a few paces. He indicated last week he is unlikely to bowl at the beginning of this three-match series, which gets under way on Monday. Opener Zak Crawley told BBC Sport: “He seems to be…
