The on-again, off-again relationship between the Olympics and baseball is heading toward another reconciliation in 2028. That leads to the inevitable discussion of what the rosters could look like. Commissioner Rob Manfred said last month he was open to the possibility of major leaguers participating, but recent history suggests some obstacles. Baseball was dropped after the 2008 Games, returned in 2021 in Japan, then was left out this year in Paris. The sport returns for the Los Angeles Games four years from now. At the Tokyo Olympics, Major League Baseball only allowed players not on 40-man rosters to play —…

Stress can make people feel sick, and bacteria in the gut might be to blame, according to a study1 in mice. The research suggests that a stressed brain directly shuts down specific glands in the gut, affecting gut bacteria and the body’s broader immune system. The study “is a technical tour de force”, says neuroscientist John Cryan at University College Cork in Ireland, who reviewed the study. Most work on the gut–brain connection has focused on how bacteria affect the brain, so Cryan welcomes research into how psychological states can exert ‘top-down’ control of bacteria. “It’s a really cool part…

A record-breaking expedition to drill into rocks at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean has given scientists their best glimpse yet of what the Earth might look like underneath its crust. Researchers extracted an almost uninterrupted 1,268-metre long sample of green-marble-like rock from a region where Earth’s mantle — the thick, interior layer that makes up more than 80% of the planet’s bulk — has pushed up through the sea floor (see ‘Deep-sea drilling’). The samples, described on 8 August in Science1, offer unprecedented insights into processes that lead to the crust’s formation. We had that story in our head”…
